BrettBenson's Blog

Looks like warmer weather for most of the week this week so it's time to get serious about lawncare.

Looking for a little lawn help here...I have what I thought was crabgrass on my lawn.  I put down some pre-emergent herbicide this Spring but it looks like the "crabgrass" is coming back.  So I guess here are my questions: What does crabgrass look like?  And is there anything I can do now to prevent it this year?

Any tips would be appreciated.

Hi Brett! I feel bad that no one has answered your blog so I will! Unfortunately, I don't know much about crab grass. But you should fertilize your lawn, I think like twice a year, or at least once!

Shelby--
Thanks...I know...it's sad. Nobody wants to help the weatherman. I saw a commerical about a Bayer product that claims to kill all weeds (including crab grass...which is weird because I always heard you had to kill it before it grew) so I am going to buy some today before work.

Nice! I hope it works. Doesn't Bayer aspirin also save your life if you take it while having a heart attack? I guess that's a different Bayer company. Here look, I found a web site about it:

"Normal Lawn Grass" is generally very fine and the individual plants will be closely "knit" and nearly equally spaced from each other.

Crabgrass, on the other hand, does not look like "Lawn Grass" but instead has "sea green" "broad" leaves which grow along stems which tend to "hug" the ground whereas "Normal Lawn Grass" tends to grow vertically.

Because Crabgrass has broad leaves and likes to spread horizontally it has the tendency to "smother" the desired grass as it grows.

Evev though Crabgrass is in the same "family" as "Normal Lawn Grass" there is a specific herbicide that you could spray on your entire lawn that will only kill the Crabgrass. I don't know which one it is though.

I hope that you are able to eradicate your yard of the Crabgrass!!

Yep...that sounds like what I've got. I sprayed some stuff on it Friday (the product said I would see results in the first 24 hours) but the crabgrass looks strong as ever. I'll keep trying.

From what I remember, some herbicides need to be applied when it is much warmer than it was on Friday. When it is cool like it was Friday the active ingredients in the chemicals tend to not "do their job" and so it is as if you hadn't done anything at all. I noticed the ground was still very wet on Friday.

Plants are most likely to die when they are very "stressed". Did the product label say anything about not apllying it below say like 75*F? As I recall Friday was a bit windy as well... a bad thing when spraying! The warmer it is the more vegetation "transpires", the cooler it is the more their transpiration slows down.

Additionally, 24 hours seems to be "rather quick" to me. I would guess that by Tuesday morning you should be able to see some wilting and/or browning of the Crabgrass leaves if the product is working properly.

One thing I have noticed here in Utah, is the hoopla about global warming. Its real, and its going to get worse.

I've seen the leaves turning brown (before they got covered by snow again...:). So I think the stuff I used is working. Thanks for the tips everyone.
