I got an email from a former coworker of mine Saturday...he is heading out storm chasing this upcoming week.  This is his third year doing it and he has already "caught" seven tornadoes (which is pretty amazing).  There is definately one thing I miss about living in the Midwest...the severe weather.

We can get severe weather in Utah but it doesn't happen nearly as much as in the Midwest (and it almost never lasts as long).  Sometimes we would get thunderstom systems (heavy rain, wind, etc.) for hours at a time we would turn off the lights in our house and watch it.

Now, of course, I don't like hearing when people are hurt or property is damaged by storms but it is incredible to see some of these events in person.  I've seen two tornadoes touch down and I have sat through one hurricane in my life...anybody out there been through weather like that?  Anybody storm chase?

You should go storm spotting with my son and I..we have seen quite a few small tornados form from T-storms over the stansbury mountains, and over the southern tip of the oqqurrih mountains near Mercur. Last September, the Stockton police department officer on duty and my son and I witnessed a funnel form near the mouth of Ophir canyon, and dissapate. Cone shaped, and nearly touched ground.

Wow...pretty interesting stuff. I think many people would be surprised to know that we have several funnel clouds and tornadoes in Utah every year...they just tend to happen in isolated areas. But now that people are developing in many of those areas the number of reports are increasing.

Be careful out there when storm chasing :)

That is true. A lot of people do not know that Utah, has several funnel sightings each yesr. Although terrain plays a big part in our weather, Utah does get sever storms strong enough to form Tornados. Now, the reason I mentioned the southern part of the oqqurihr range near Mercur, is that the terrain playes a very big part in the formation of these funnels.
