My Finicess went to apply for a job in the Salt lake Valley today.  Not at a Mexican resteraunt, or anything like that.  But at an asbistos removing company.  The company had to go get him an interaptor to take his application.  I found this very disturbing.  He and I both were born and raised here in the United States,  I never thought that an English speaking person would need an interuptor in the U.S.  I thought that Utah had voted this an english speaking State.  What is being done to inforce this law?   Because of his uncomfortablity with this he ended up walking out.  He was upset that non-english speaking men walked in and got asistants before him since they spoke spanish.  We are not in Mexico he should have been able to apply for this job with out all the problems.

Perhaps he was more concerned about poor grammar and/or spelling.

Just to clear things up, there is no law against speaking Spanish. The English only laws mean that official state business will be conducted in English. Private entities may communicate with each other in any language they choose.

He needs to sue them for discrimination. They would if the shoe was on the other foot.

It's not right, but unfortunately it's not against the law to conduct business in mexican (And yes I know I said it, so I don't need any comments from the mexican glee club) Good luck with the job search, unfortunately blogging is harder than talking because you need to know how to spell, lol, or the wolves will come at you..

That is bad...... I feel that to conduct business in the US you should have at least 1 person at all times of operation to the public that speaks English. My grandmother died in a restaraunt in Minnesota because she was choking on shrimp and no one in the whole place spoke English.....

If we have a Law like ADA act that states that you should have a TDD/TTY access to credit card companies and all local and fed gov ran places because of Equal communications oportunity rights... then We the speaking should have the same courtesy in this country....

The language of this land was originally NATIVE AMERICAN, it became English/French/Spanish/Gaelic/etc. when immigrants came over on boats and took over.

If I remember correctly, much of Utah belonged to Mexico once upon a time. Anyway, so the White English speakers, through numbers, made the language of the land, English. Here we are. Now, I see that the tables are turning and change is happening again. It stands to reason that this, like most change, it won't come easily. I think it's cool to teach spanish as a second language. Why?? Because our neighbors speak it. Germans, like many countries teach English as a required second language. I say the same thing about Spanish. There is no reason, not to learn it.

I have no problems learning a new language...
Native American isnt a Language.. they were many languages Irquois, Lakota Cherokee, Navajo.... each tribe had its own and different dialects too... problem is when the English came over and basicly stole this land and created a soveriegn government all laws and documents were in English... It was also established to be the official language ......Now that time is gone and we have over 12 million illeagal aliens who really dont have a say because they arent citizens they arent resident aliens... they arent even trying to become Americans.. And they speak more than just Spanish...so I dont think their opinion matters until the start to follow our rules.. I embrace Linguistics and learning new cultures.... But we as a nation decided long ago that English was the language.. as far as I can tell we didnt change it ....and until we vote to change that We should stick to the plan.... business and govt should stick with English ... not English alone but it should be the base..... Remember Any human who feels a lack of communication will almost always feel conflict and anger because of it..... its only human nature and if we dont address the problem soon I worry that violence could happen... I dont advise it, I dont promote it, but I understand enough about human nature to know it will be almost inevitable.......so fine learn all the languages you can if not for communications but to expand your mind into other cultures but for god sake if we dont unify some form of contact we are in for a shakey ride...

the thing about loisavery's post is that if i go to germany to live, i am expected to learn GERMAN!
if i go to india to live, i am expected to learn HINDI!!
if i go to china to live, i am expected to learn CHINESE!!
BUT IF SOMEONE COMES TO AMERICA TO LIVE, THEY ARE NOT EXPECTED TO LEARN THE DOMINANT LANGUAGE OF THE LAND: ENGLISH!!
no, we the people of america who grew up speaking english are expected to learn the languages of ALL the people who immigrate here, spanish in particular!! oh, and one last thing: spanish is NOT the original language of mexico!! duuuhhh!!!!

Go Baldman and Spacealien, i agree if the MEXICANS don't like it they should go back to mexico. The border patrol wouldn't try to stop them. If you move to our country then learn English! If you refuse then GO BACK TO MEXICO!

Thanks for proving my point. People came here and things changed. The white people came and things changed. Now, the Mexicans are coming in and things are changing. Regardless of how much you whine about Spanish, people will learn it and it will be a part of our society. In fact, it already is. ;-)

Oh and Native Americans = aboriginal people of North America. They had thier own languages before the whites came. Let me know if you need any more anthropological help. LOL!

All people living in the America's are technically "Americans" We're talking about the difference between U.S. Citizens and Mexican Citizens.. The Constitution was written for the U.S. Citizens, Not for the world, it angers me when people cry about their rights, yet they are not even Legally residing here, Our laws were put in place to protect the Citizens of the U.S., it angers me when people come here, break our laws and they are not even legally residing here. This Nation was founded on the premise of Immigration, But we are not living in the same times as we were, People are now more intent on destroying this Nation from the inside, or out. I shudder to think where we are heading...
