One in ten women suffer from it, and in some cases girls as young as 11 years old have it. PCOS: Polycystic Ovary Syndrome. It often times goes undiagnosed. I finally decided to blog about PCOS because someone very close to me is suffering from the disease.

My mom and I couldn't figure out why my sister was so overweight. Was it because she was simply overeating? Could have been. But after getting her a trainer and proper nutrition it seemed tough for her to drop the weight. After going to a specialist, she was diagnosed with PCOS. The cure? For many women (and by the way my sister is only 17), losing the weight can decrease many of the unwanted side effects.

It goes undiagnosed because a lot of doctors are not as familiar with it as they should be, and t's still unclear what causes it. Symptoms include decreased periods, increased hair growth on your face and other areas of your body. It can also cause type 2 diabetes...the list goes on. One of the most major side effects  is OBESITY (doctors aren't sure if they go hand in hand).

So...I just wanted to blog about it, and clue you in...in case you have a young daughter that is overweight, suffering from some of these symtoms and you can't figure out why. PCOS could be why.

I really feel sorry for women. if testicles gave us men half the problems that ovaries give women, men would just lay around and do nothing. There would probably be lot more done about the problems as well, more research, traetments, Etc..

PO,

Too funny, but not far from the truth. When I had a complete hysterectomy, someone had the nerve to ask me if I wanted to keep my ovaries. I told them 'expletive deleted', THEY were the problem. The hormone shifts are agony to the chemical balance in a woman's body. I've had fewer migraines; among the plethora of other effects.

Ninevah,
Thank you for having the courage to bring something like PCOS into public view. And to your Mom and Sister for seeking out proper care.

Is there a university hospital near them? I'm sure any research/teaching facility has a study going on regarding cause and treatment.

There was a weight management device I saw on Scientific American Frontiers a few years back. It was a pacemaker type device that sent electrical impulses to trick the stomach into thinking it was full. I've heard nothing about it since.

My thinking is that drug companies suffocated the project because they'd lose revenue with a device like this available and doctors wouldn't make as much money as they do with gastric surgeries.

A device like that would be perfect for situations such as your sister's to back up the good work she is already doing.

Nineveh: thanks for writing this blog. I'm glad you're getting this information out for other women who may have the same problem. PCOS definitely needs more publicity than it's been getting. I'm glad your sister was able to get a correct diagnosis.

Shelly13: I don't mean to pry and I don't know the whole story but ... why would you trust the "diagnosing" of someone who I assume was not legally qualified and licensed to make medical diagnoses in the first place?

Thanks for asking, that's a relief in itself!` I guess I should have made it plural. But it sure doesn't sound right does it? As far as trust, they were my family so there was a certain amount of inherent trust, that I didn't let carry me far. Officals always say that they just don't have enough to go on. So here we sit 5 years later with unlawful judgments, countless heartaches and one hell of a tragic story. huh?!

I know, I know, as soon as I single handedly invent the power then I personally have none....I've heard it all before hence the sarcasm and the weight always falls onto me....

Have a good one!`

Mike,

Apparently you missed the fact that an ovarian situation was discussed ... as were symptoms weight management and nutrition in Ninevah's blog. Hysterectomy is an option for this disorder.
