Who would have thought that a colorful cosmetic could have so much impact on a campaign? This is a topic that I've hesitated to blog about, only because I disagree with all the attention the media has given it. But I have to remind myself of my news philosophy.

“A news sense is really a sense of what is important, what is vital, what has color and life - what people are interested in. That's journalism.”

SO...if THIS is what is important to people, then let's talk about it. Are we making an issue out of non-issue? Here's something I wrote on my personal blog about Barack Obama's LIPSTICK ON A PIG comment.

"We all heard Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin say the only difference between a hockey mom and a pitbull is lipstick. Enter Barack Obama. The Senator and Presidential hopeful told a crowd  "You can put lipstick on a pig" (insert giggles and clapping here)..."It's still a pig. You can wrap an old fish in a piece of paper called change. It's still going to stink after eight years." Insert outrage and backlash here. You guessed it. The McCain camp came out swinging. McCain's campaign says it was "offensive and disgraceful." Say your sorry he says. Obama's response? He wasn't referring to Palin when he made the comment about LIPSTICK ON A PIG."

Listen. The truth is "lipstick on a pig" is one of the oldest political phrases out there. John McCain used it when talking about Hillary Clinton's healthcare plan. No one called him a sexist, but people are calling Barack Obama a sexist. Obama didn't mention Palin's name once during the 25 minutes of his speech prior to making that comment. BUT critics say he KNEW what he was saying, that it WAS directed toward Gov. Palin. You be the judge. Some women, many Hillary supporters are retracting their support and throwing it to Mrs. Palin. How do you feel about the comment? Was it offensive? Was it sexist? Or is this a topic that just got too much media attention?

Maybe Obama shouldn't be on the offensive. Maybe he should just apologize, smooth it over and move on. Even if he didn't intend to offend anybody (only he really knows what he meant when he said it), perhaps he should have said "Listen the timing was bad. I apologize if I offended anybody etc etc etc." Now we're left with a mess...the media is obsessed with talking about LIPSTICK ON A PIG. Should it be addressed to the degree it has been? The national news media has latched itself on to this subject like a leech, and I have a feeling it won't stop until its been sucked dry. There aren't many things I share my opinion about in public because I have to remember to respect my boundaries as a journalist, but I think I have a right to say something about my industry. I am disappointed. Let's focus on the real issues my fellow journalists. Sure. Let's talk about it, but let's not dedicate endless hours of coverage to the topic. There are other things on people's minds besides lipstick on a pig. Every candidate in this race should be treated equally, every candidate should be faced with tough questions. The media has a tremendous impact on public opinion. It's a responsibility we have to remind ourselves of. This is an election year. America's future is in all our hands and the public depends on us when it comes to getting information about the candidates running for President. That's why I say, let's move on and FOCUS ON THE REAL ISSUES.

Here's what I want to know. If you had to vote today, who would you elect to be the next President? And then ask yourself and answer this. Before the conventions, if you had to vote then, who would you have elected? Has your opinion changed about which candidate you favor? OR do you feel we are forced to pick between the lesser of two evils?

Very well said Nineveh. I couldn’t agree with you more. I believe that Obama knew what he was saying and that he intended to stir things up a little bit. I think that analogy was carefully chosen and slipped in where it would seem innocent. The fact that McCain had used it while talking about Hillary gave him a perfect out. It is just too convenient that it happened when it did. The Republicans were energized at their convention far more than the Democrats and their bounce has closed the gap between Obama and McCain. Obama needed to get his side fired up somehow and this is how he chose to do it. It’s an old political trick and Obama really is a politician despite all of his attempts to portray himself as something new and different.

Obama won’t apologize and I don’t think he should. Why? Because this is politics and the stakes don’t get any higher than this. This is the very biggest of the big leagues. Sarah Palin comes into this campaign already carrying the “Sarah Barracuda” nickname. She then christened herself the “Pitbull with Lipstick” at the Republican convention. Either she’s ready for the big leagues or she isn’t. Something tells me that she is. I expect to see her come out of her republican cocoon with a vengeance in the next day or so. She’ll get her shots in.

Is this the way we should pick a President? Perhaps not. But it’s politics and it is a dirty, ugly, inefficient, messy business. This is the way it is and it will stay this way until the voters decide to focus on real issues instead of these side shows. I don’t foresee that happening anytime soon.

It wouldn't matter what Obama said... Lipstick on any animal and the republicans would take it offensively... Obama has been running on the Idea of change, so McCain sees how much that is working and he starts blurting change... I want to know who let them become corrupt in the first place!

I think that you have to lower your opponents campaign platform with a mudslinging campaign to make your self appear larger...

I don't give a crap about lipstick on any animal (Besides PETA would be all over you in a heart beat!)

I want to hear how each candidate plans to dig us out of Bushes hole... I want to hear how they plan to end corruption in Washington... I want to hear how they plan to get people back to work...

I could care less about the childish name calling and technical interpretations on hidden implications...

I AM SICK OF POLITICIANS SKIRTING REAL ISSUES by getting the publics underwear all in a bunch over lame issues! In a way thats typical, people focus on stupid issues because they don't have the brain power to think critically about REAL TOUGH issues...

Shouldn't we be focusing on something better? We have A LOT BIGGER fish to fry!!!!!!!

Thats my two yen anyway...

It unfortunately has become about being put in a postion of deciding between the lesser of the available evils.

That's why I used to write in Jeane Kirkpatrick's name. She easy qualified to be this nation's leader and I used my vote to say so. I'm considering writing in Sandra Day OConnor's name. Gender isn't an issue with her. Nor did she ever feel a need to say she could breastfeed while performing her public duty, as has Gov. Palin.

It would be very disappointing if Gov. Palin came out playing the gender card with a vengeance ... especially while others are being criticized for using a phrase Ann Richards, John McCain, John Edwards, VP Cheney, etc were never called sexist for.

Why isn't anyone talking about what Gov. Palin has done for special education funding in her state ... that's a real issue.

"What's the difference between a hockey Mom and a pitbull? Lipstick". Hooey!

I was a hockey Mom and a coach. Before that I played against men in a recreational league ... and didn't wipe my perfume, or lipstick off for the game.

Well, not until I started wearing a plexiglass face shield ... transferred lipstick blocking my vision didn't work well. I only let it happen once.

Why are we not mentioning Gov. Palin's inability to address the crime of rape in her state which has the highest rate in her state over any other? McCain's circus stunt to bring her in was purely to capture clinton lovers. Her ability had little to do with it. There were plenty more more experienced and qualified people to take the position. This should be about issues and not her gender.

The truth is, she strongly opposes sex education that teaches birth control and support that of which teaches abstinence. HER OWN DAUGHTER PROVES THAT STANCE WRONG! How is she gonna make good decisions with no common sense?

draco, draco, draco! I think bringing that up so unfair. and the statement about no common sense is baseless.

I for the most have a hard time listening to any of it because the entire system is soooooooo convoluted as to be undecipherable.

You cant beleive a word of it so why listen to it.

It is a sad pathetic thing that the common man cannot not make sense out of all the convoluted nonsense coming out of their mouths. It is a sad and pathietic thing that even if we could make sense of it it would be a moot point because none of it is real.

The Picture I see is one that gets dirtier and dirtier and dirtier and dirtier, how much dirtier can it get before becoming so putrid and rotten that kills itself?

What's unfair about bringing out that Gov. Palin's state has, by far, the worst domestic abuse record in this nation ... rape, child abuse, spousal abuse?

The numbers come from the state itself. Per Capita, it wreaks!

Which isn't taking sides, because I also know that Gov. Palin's accomplishments regarding special education funding could become the standard for this nation.

It doesn't make sense for her to brag about how she's been able to breastfeed and conduct official business at the same time on multiple occassions ...too much information.

A simple yes (or deferment to everyone else being able to handle both roles) to the question of whether she could handle both jobs would have sufficed ... or better yet, the question never should have been asked at all.

As for the comment itself I think that it is a waste of newsprint, and typical of the mindless banter that it going on between two parties both of which are completely out of touch with the real major concerns of the nation - illegal immigration and the lousy economy.

Any one who say Obama make the comment knows what context it was in the republicans what to make something from nothing and live in denial over it. So more of the same actions that have kept us in a turmoil of circular dysfunction to begin with.
