I've covered a lot of troop deployments, and every one is unique for different reasons. Utah's 328th combat support hospital is leaving for a one year deployment to Iraq. Their primary role: TO PROVIDE HEALTH CARE TO IRAQI DETAINEES. I put it in bold because it hit me: these soldiers won't be taking care of their own or even Iraqi soldiers, but detainees, all suspected of being terrorists...the enemy. That would be tough. I asked the soldiers about Abu Ghraib. While their role is different (they will be serving as medics), they'll still be in contact with Iraqi detainees. I asked them, "I imagine you have personal feelings that could influence how you feel about taking care of detainees. how do you seperate those feelings from what you've been deployed to do? how do you bring yourself to take care of iraqi detainnees...?" Their answers were all very impressive...many of them admitted that it will be difficult, but they say part of operation Iraqi freedom is to "win the Iraqi hearts and minds"...more tonight at 9 if you're interested.

Any thoughts?

Best of luck to all the 78 Army Reservists that are being sent to Iraq. We'll pray for your safe return.

On a side note...covering this deployment was different for me as a reporter. The soldiers left from a local hotel in SLC and while I'll remain a professional by not mentioning their name, I will say this. We got kicked out of the hotel. Managment was SO rude, and for the life of me I could not understand how someone could have a problem with us covering the troops. We were covering a troop deployment! It wasn't a controversial story about the hotel. I understand it's private property, and we did call for permission and orginally we were given the green light. I guess they didn't want us inside the hotel where all the soldiers were. Either way, I was a  bit surprised and even felt insulted..etc. I understand the media isn't very well liked in some cases, but seriously...I found it odd that a local hotel wouldn't allow us to film the deployment inside. We've never faced that problem before...oh well! I'm just glad it didn't deter us from covering the story.

Hmmmm! curious I am! I can olny speculate to some sort of threat they were feeling.
HMMMM! The potential for whatever runs rampant in my mind.

Thought? Yes, that these men and women know to put personal feelings aside for a greater good. There's a lot to military obligation people don't realize.

Does it matter more who is being treated than the fact they need the care?

When the abuses at Abu Ghraib happened, those 'soldiers' dishonored the military's integrity. The hatred they generated has cost soldiers their lives. An SP unit was brought in to help get security there back on track.

Any situation that compromises the safety and security of our military should be handled harshly and publicly. To intentionally wait until a soldier is overseas to take action aginst his/her family is especially appalling.

Addressing your side note ... that hotel isn't the only one. The woman who cuts my daughter's hair wanted her donation to Locks of Love to get media attention. That shop loves how my daughters face their adversity by helping others. The store the salon is in won't give their permission. Guess they don't need the business a good will story like this would bring.

Just out of curiosity, did anyone check into a possible Utah connection with that helecopter crash near Basra? The helecopter was from 2nd Batallion. The Army has elements of that Btn spread in a few states around the nation. That bird flew out of Kuwait. We have support people from 2nd Btn here in Kuwait.

Mariposa, it was the 2nd Batt. From Oklahoma and Texas that crashed. The Oklahoma Guardsmen were members of Detachment 1, Company B, 2nd Battalion, 149th Aviation based in Lexington. The unit, combined with members of the Texas National Guard, deployed to Iraq in August, said Col. Pat Scully, a Guard spokesman.

Nineveh, part of it could be simply to protect the privacy of other hotel guests. I don't think it was in any way an "Anti-Troop" situation, just simply a privacy concern with all the rampant law suits out there.

Hey, I noticed when reviewing the video to send to some of the people you interviewed that most of Chelsea Kluge's interview was cut out - and it isn't in raw footage. She asked that I find out if you can add the raw footage to the site so she can send it off to her family.

Well we rarely play raw interviews in news stories. We try to feature as many people as we can. The live interview however aired in the morning. That was the entire interview I'm guessing she wanted a copy of. For a copy of the aircheck, call 536-1313. I believe the interview was in the 7am hour of GDU. Someone at the desk will let you know how to get in touch with someone that can get you a copy.
Hope that helps.
