We all know him as the actor that played Arnold on Different Strokes, and today that child star we all grew up watching will be in court facing misdemeanor charges of reckless driving and disorderly conduct. It all stems from an incident on Sept. 6th. Gary Coleman is accused of backing up his truck into 24 year-old Colt Rushton and another car at the Payson Bowling Alley. Police say Coleman got irate when Rushton started taking pictures of him inside the bowling alley. Coleman asked him to stop, but Rushton kept taking pics. The argument escalated and that's when the alleged incident happened. If convicted, Coleman could face up to six months in jail and hundreds of dollars in fines. That's what we're expected to find out in a Payson courtroom this morning.

In a seperate civil case, Rushton is suing Coleman for medical bills, pain and suffering and punitive damages.

Here's what I want to know from you. Do you care? I'm sitting here, waiting for Gary Coleman to arrive. Right across the street is Inside Edition, which we all know is an entertainment news outlet. So by all means be honest, does this "case" interest you? And if so, is it only because it involves Gary Coleman?

No interest at all in the case or Gary Coleman.
Well, I guess I do have a slight interest in the legality of someone attempting to charge for pictures taken of them in a public place.

Yes, it actually does interest me.
I want to see if a small town court will be swayed by his fame. If you or I intentionally used a deadly weapon (his truck) to assault anyone WE would be in jail for at least a year.

I could have lived very comfortably not knowing about it, but that hasn't happened.

Everyone has a right to privacy. I find it unfortunate that a person can't go bowling without their life being disrupted.

what happened to "innocent until proven guilty"? UDHITIT...i like the point you make though, about how much of a role his "fame" will play in this case.
mariposa...you're right about privacy, but all court cases are public record and because he's a celebrity that makes him a public figure. unfortunately, the "media" frenzy comes with the territory.

Where did I say he was guilty? I simply floated a hypothetical. ;)

As far as privacy, You have no reasonable expectation of privacy in public.

They say our justice system is an "innocent until proven guilty" system. But many defendants are treated "guilty until proven innocent."

It's really sad that the child star is in so much trouble.

I would never infringe on another person in public without asking their permission. To do so is just plain rude ... especially a person whose life has not exactly been serene.

Gary Coleman's parents blew the money he made on the show. He never had a realistic childhood and didn't learn how to handle his temper. Now he has a Mommy Dearest instead of a wife (I'd never treat a child or my husband the way she was treating him).

If anything, I feel sorry for him and what he has to endure.

David,
You have no idea how true that is ... especially when challenging the status quo.

I am very interested in this

Mariposa, I appreciate what you are saying in that last comment... I am a bit enraged that nobody seems to be looking at this so called victim.

I think this so called victim was the instigator of the entire thing,,,

I am just speculating here but the story goes that this thing began inside the bowling alley when the so called vitim was asked to stop taking pictures.

I have a vision of this guy following Coleman out side when all he is trying to do is leave. Who is really the victim here?

I dont have all the facts on this But the picture I have in my mind of this incident is direspectfull twerp with the camera who needs his assss beat. the entire thing enrages me to visualise what I think was the intire incident.

I am often atonished at the lack of empathy human beings seem to have for other people.

This Gary Colmen feliow once a star and now the laughing stock... I am betting that just about anyone in the same circumastances would not want the public taking pictures... hence making a scene and pointing him out.

I just cant imagine someone being soOOO CREEEEPY! as to take photos and follow this guy out of the building instgating the intire matter.

WHATS UUU TALKIN ABOUT WILLIS!!! It is really to bad this guy cannot learn to laugh at himself and roll with it instead of fighting it.

Maybe the judge will give him a gift in the form of much needed thearpy... It just pisses me off that apparenty nobody is holding this twerp accountable. He should not be suing... He shoule be thankful that the emotionaly charged coleman did not pull out a gun and kill him on the spot...

Celebrities thrive on attention. When attention is needed for a movie or a project then anything and everything that draws attention is welcome and encouraged.

Unfortunately there is no switch to turn off the attention when a celebrity has finished using the public and now does not want to be bothered. One of the downsides of that profession I would guess.

If Mr. Coleman wants to live a quiet life, then I wish him the best. I believe Mariposa is absolutely correct that politeness dictates that you should ask to take a picture of a person. However, shouldn't being polite also dictate that you do not send a bodyguard over to take away a camera or try to charge for the picture.

Did anyone else find it very strange that the lady was holding Mr. Coleman by the wrist and pulling him almost the entire segment?

Ogre,

Hence the 'Mommy Dearest' comment! She was treating him like an incompetent child (not that its okay to treat a child that way).

As I understand it, Coleman's wife is who asked that the photo op be paid for ... blame the right person.

And, why would anybody stand behind a vehicle that is in motion?

Mariposa,
I did not realize that it was his wife who asked to be paid.

So, to correctly assign the blame:
I blame myself for not finding out more about the circumstances before commenting.
I could blame Ninevah for doing the story, but she is correct that he is a public figure and (some) people are interested. Perhaps the blame lies with the people who spend their lives following someone else's life.
I blame the wife for being very tacky (pay me for a picture) and acting creepy dragging her husband around.
I blame Rushton for being a jerk and not allowing someone to bowl in peace.
And finally I will blame Gary Coleman for not controlling his temper. Heck for all I know he probably got a better score than I ever did in bowling and thus hurts my self esteem. I will blame him for that too.

I laughed my Arrse off watching his wife drag him here dragging him there. It looked like your typical pissed off mom in a store taking her brat of a child out of the store.

I am not a fan of celebs but I don't feel sorry for photographers that get hurt taking photos of stars even after be asked not to. Respect people and you don't get hurt nine times out of ten. stalking these people should not be tolerated anymore than an average Joe stalking someone. Regardless of there fame they are entitled to some privacy.

Coleman ought to be called Coal man now that he knows what the fallout boys are talking about. Instead of different strokes it ought to be JJ and Good Times. We not enough "DYNOMITE!"
