Jose Fanjul, the West High Teacher accused of having a sexual relationship with one of his students was in court today. It was a preliminary hearing, which don't typically take too much time, but today it took hours. Not only did Fanjul's defense attorney enter a not guilty plea on all 10 counts that he's been charged with, but we got to hear from the alleged victim in this case, a former West High Student. The 16 year-old testified in court and was very explicit about the alleged sexual relationship she had with Mr. Fanjul. In light of her testimony, the prosecution wanted to add a rape charge to the forcible sodomy and sexual abuse charges Fanjul is already facing. That is yet to be determined.
After the teen's testimony, the defense had its chance to cross-examine her. Their tactic will be to chip away at her credibility. The alleged victim admitted to lying to police and under oath about this case. She said she lied because she was "under the influence of a predator."
The Prosecutor in the case would not comment on camera, but Fanjul's attorney did. He said his client is innocent and will be cleared of all the charges. He expects this case will go to trial.
So you be the judge. Our justice system says "innocent until proven guilty." Do you think the public has already stamped him "guilty"?

If you've never meet a 15 yr old girl with a crush, you are probably missing the whole story. They love you one minute and are stabbing you in the back trying to destroy your life to save face the next. They will sell you out in a heart beat. So just don't do it.
This does not condone his actions.
Is there any evidence or DNA?

Considering that this same girl has already sent another man to prison something is wrong! Plus for a 15 year old girl to use the verbage of "under the influence of a predator" sounds an awful lot like coaching to me!! Who's the predator? Him or her??

The fact that this girl has a history of this behavior only leads me to the conclusion that she is just a little tramp. This is the same girl that had a "relationship" with a counselor at the same school. Now, I'm not condoning the actions of the teachers and counselors involved here. Sex with a minor is always wrong especially when the adult is someone in a position of trust. The teacher and counselor should have known better and there is no excuse for their actions but the slut knew what she was doing and now she's playing the victim and most likely trying to get a quick buck.

Does the student know the teachers family? I have heard of people trying to "buy" their grades but that is out of line. Too bad there is not much detail on the laws of blackmail, in juvenile court.

"I want the A honor roll now, or your going to jail!"

Come on, I see that not too many educators are feeling the deficit increase already, and have to deal with students that are in the field of psycological warfare as interns too, but regardless, teachers are notorious for playing like Oliver North, when students create these type of situations until the last minute when the "Don't bite the hand that feeds you" theory comes into play. That is when you start hearing about the woe is me situations from environments that the teacher never heard about before.

Student and teachers exchanging email, I just heard an update on this, and I in my entire lifetime never heard of students emailing teachers, or on some chat line. Come on.

If you had sex with a teacher, and then with his co-worker, that is your an underage prostitute isn't it, that or they need to catch a pimp.

Now I find out she is 17. Perfect back stabbing age. But it seems in Utah you don't have to be young to back stab!

"Just the facts" I do hope they get to the bottom of a story like this one. You would certinly have to convince me beyond reasonable doubt if I were on the jury. If it is her word vs. his word situation they need to work extra hard to bring out the truth.

It would be interesting to know how his co. workers viewed his conduct with the students. Did he maintain a professional distance; especially from the girls? Little pats on the shoulder maby a hug here and there it can end up in a disaster.

It is a little like the cold poisionus snake who said "please pick me up and hold me I am cold" When he was warm he bit the one holding him!! After the person threw the snake back on the ground he said, I was nice and warmed you why did you bite me? The snake said 'It is my nature it is what I do"!

Teachers have a hard job and it calls for extreeme attention to small details especially when it comes to making any personal contact with the students.

This 'victim' apparently had at least two sexual relationships with men in authority within a year's time. Something is very wrong with this situation. She discredited herself by admitting lying.

Perhaps she craved the attention she received from the first incident.

To everyone that shared their thoughts, thanks as always. The trial hasn't started, but I too am very interested to see how the jury will see this case because of her past relationship with a guidance counselor at West High. Like I said, the Defense will try to chip away at her credibility.
I will say this though, the alleged victim was VERY detailed about this alleged sexual relationship with Mr. Fanjul. Too disturbing to share on T.V. or on a blog.

Perhaps she's just a little sexually disfunctional like a lot of people in the SL valley. The men were both wrong for getting involved.

Children who have been abused at a young age act out. She may be doing that but that would not be the point. If a child or underage person even says yes, it is on the adult to say no assuming she is acting out and didn't just have the bad luck to run across two men much too old for excuses.

If it is true or untrue the court will sort it out. I will say that if she is correct and if she was abused by this older man, no matter the circumstances, toss the book at him. Troubled kids do not need older adults acting out illegally. Talk about further ruining a kids life. He is old enough to be her dad plus! Don't mess with anyone's kids. And never was it more important to follow decency's rules than when a child is acting out.

codromystro your attitude about children is all wrong. That you don't get it that they are children and that you say:

"They love you one minute and are stabbing you in the back trying to destroy your life to save face the next."

Is remarkable to me. And very sad. It shows that you believe the immature mind of a child is that child's ok to molest. There is no older male who should ever think they do not carry the burden of being responsible and not breaking the law and not further damaging a young person. Your concept is just unthinkable and not truthful since if you asked any man asked whether some old guy molesting his daughter is the daughter's fault you would be recovering in a hospital.

codromystro I should add that I do agree with you on the summation of never doing it. It is just that one part that really, really bothered me.
