Courage for Campaign, the same organization that sent a petition to the LDS Church asking it to end its involvement in the political battle over same sex marriage has been airing an ad in California that shows just how controversial and heated this issue is. Take a look at the ad, and tell me what you think. Do you think it's offensive to Mormons? It shows two missionairies "invading" the home of a lesbian couple, looking for their marriage license. They find it and tear it in half. What kind of message do you think this sends to people about the LDS faithful?

Thanks for your thoughts! I appreciate all viewpoints...

I think it should be considered offensive to anyone.

However, it is the metaphorical equivalent of what the 'church's' position has been shown to be.

'Marriage' is a religious institution which is part of a civil union. It is also a failing institution ... over half of all marriages end in divorce - not to mention the ones that continue while being plagued by violence and infidelity.

Half a century ago, my family lived next to a homosexual couple. My father could be less than loving toward my mother. Steve and Lester gave us the sanctuary we should have had in our own home ... it was their example that enabled my siblings and I to have successful marriages.

Who doesn't deserve the human dignity of making emergency medical decisions for a loved one ... or being included on their insurance ... or being able to access legal documents?

Legislating morality has never been worked.

I think it might be a bit overdone. Maybe they should have used some more common looking lesbians. Or a male couple. Guess neither are sexy enough.

But looking through the adds there that are yes on prop 8.
They have no real arguement. Children cannot be born to a same sex couple biologicaly. Wich is what their argument is based upon.

Of Freaking Course!!! the best enviroment for a child Is to be in a home with both BIOLOGICAL parents present promoting a stable family for the child!!!
But sadly that is not the case many times ... even with both biological parents present.

Mormons have a step of marriage above and beyond that wich the state recognizes.
Getting Sealed in the temple. But even these end in divorce sometimes.

So what is their Freaking Point?!?!

That ad is way overdone. It sends a message that the Mormon church is bad. A church that forces its will upon others.

That is not the way God works. We have our free agency. The church will not approve of same sex marriage. They encourage people with this problem to seek appropriate counseling.

Thank you Nineveh for letting me see this ad.

lol..

I hadn't seen that ad, and I loved it!!

Yes it's over the top, but no more over the top than the ads telling people to vote yes on 8.

The LDS church has such a history of being discriminated against that you'd think that somewhere along the way someone in the church would have learned a lesson about the pitfalls of bigotry and hypocrisy.

I hope that the money spent by the church on this issue, that could have been used to help needy members of their faith, is spent in vain.

You can only stand in the way of progress for so long. The world is changing! Eventually, we'll all be equal!

I think it's rather sad that there cannot be a meeting somewhere in the middle. What same-sex couples are looking for, at least according to all I've heard them say, are rights such as insurance, survivor benefits, etc. What the LDS church (and most Christian churches) wants is to define marriage as between one man and one woman. So there really is no compromise that pleases both sides? I think that it's much more simple than people are willing to admit... otherwise someone is not being honest about what they really want. One final thought, didn't the LDS church come out in the early '90s with The Family Proclamation, this isn't a new position for them.

Yea, the vote for Prop 8 ads show gay people going through your under-ware drawer and all of your personal items. They also show only one group (the one group that most people don't know or understand) of all the groups that are against prop 8.

This ad is pure propaganda and is fear inducing.

Odd that you mention that the LDS church is bigoted and full of hypocrisy for their stance on this issue. I guess you should throw Obama in on it too.

He believes in civil unions, not marriage.

That was awesome! Even thought the attitude seemed over the top I say it wasn't. It wasn't the exact tone I have seen but it is at the same level. If religious pushers think their precious 'marriage' is so sacred then lets outlaw divorce. Nothing so sacred and blessed from on high should ever be allowed to stop. We should force every religious couple to live together for life. And they must sleep in the same bed. While we are at it let's follow the good book and remove marital rape laws as well. The good book is pretty clear on that.

why dont you understand, as the family goes, so goes the country! The gays dont want equal rights! They want special rights! They are already a protected class under law! If i break someones arm for fun it has a penalty for assualt. If i do it because they are gay, it is a hate crime and has a larger penalty! Marriage has always been defined as between a man and woman! They already have equal protection on rights under "civil unions"! Prop 8 is a great idea! The marriage issue was voted on once before by a majority of the people! A judge overturned the vote! That is Wrong!!!!! The people are trying to protect their rights against the liberal judiciary. It is also a moral issue, therefore churches have not only a right but also an obligation to take a stand. The commercial is a persecution of the LDS church and should be condemmded! The LDS church itself has spent very little money on the controversy. It is individual members along with other Californians that have been donating the money! That is their right as citizens! Most of this rehtoric is more about bigotry toward the LDS church. I may not agree with what others ( including yourselves) may say, but i will defend to the death your right to say it! Allow others that same priviledge!

The video produced by Courage for Campaign does nothing for their cause. It is offensive and dangerous propaganda. I would not be surprised in the near future if a missionary (a 19 year-old kid) is shot to death for knocking on someone's door. The video is nothing more than fear-mongering, hateful propaganda.

Is this the image that the gays in California and their supporters want? They ask for the tolerance of the nation, but try to obtain it with fear tactics.

I would expect something of this quality from the White Supremacists, the KKK, or similar radical groups that thrive on fear.

Yes the video was over the top. But your statements here are also. I could literally tear apart every word in your statemnts.

But frankly I dont care anymore.

Maybe god will rain his wrath upon us like sodam and gomorah. But It looks like weve got atleast 10 righteous men here. So god will spare us like he said in the bible.

Or maybe the world will become a place of equality and tolerance with quality of life for all.

In response to Mktavish, I was not criticizing gays, but rather the message of the video. To imply that all Mormons hate gays is ludicrous. I am a Mormon. I have a gay nephew, a lesbian cousin, and many gay friends. They are all good people. I enjoy their company and I would say that I love them rather than "tolerate" them. I don't force my religious beliefs on them and they don't try to change my beliefs, either.

I am all in favor of equality for all and everyone should have a high quality of life. Having said that, I believe that "marriage" is defined by my religious beliefs. I do support civil unions, however.

I guess the question we should ask is, "Would changing the words 'civil union' to 'marriage' improve anyone's quality of life?"

Let's go to the experts on this one.

"These young men rummaging through these women's house, or that sort of thing, you know, smacks of the same fear factor that if you're not with us real Americans, then you're terrorists. It's so bizarre, it's over the top," said Dr. Dennis Alexander, professor emeritus of the University of Utah communications department.

Alexander continued, "It's this assault attack, where one goes after the character of the individual, or in this case, the character of a church, or whoever they think are the proponents or opponents of it, and it's annihilation politics."

I'm a little disappointed this is even a story. There wasn't this much coverage on the subject when the Marriage vote was on Utah's ballott. Why do we care what's going on in California?

Seems to me like EVERY SINGLE news station in the state wants an opportunity to run stories about members of the LDS church, hoping to stir up a little controversy.

Whether the proposition passes or not, I don't care. I just care about getting my television back, starting tomorrow. It's almost as bad as the school vouchers commercials were, running seemingly every 3 seconds.

yes this ad is very offensive to me as member however one thing that isn't mentioned why we need to get this and others to pass to describe a marrage between a man and a women is ordained of god is that if it doesn't pass and gay marrage stands in different states it will be a direct attack on the constition "freedom of religion" and besides that didn't the nation as a whole vote on bill describeing a marrage between a man and a women so my question to all where does the constition state that state courts can over rule the constition federal laws or the supreme courts

Breaky,

I never said that the ads for "Yes on 8" were the exact ad but with gays and lesbians rummaging through your magical LDS pajamas. I only said that the ads are just as over the top.

For example, I saw one yesterday where an elementary school teacher was correcting a studentm, who while drawing a picture of his "family" drew himself between a cat and a dog. And while correcting the child the principal came in and reprimanded the teacher for correcting the child.

This ad was trying to do two things. 1. Show us just how confused our kids are going to be (because kids are stupid, right?) and 2. Suggesting that there may be no end to the "madness" of defining who/what can be married. Completely silly, and over the top.

And I never said the LDS Church was bigoted for their stance, I'm saying they're bigoted for trying to stop other people from having the same freedoms/rights simply because they are different. Don't put words in my mouth.

Breaky,

I kinda miss your silence. I didn't have to correct you so much! Any chance of you shutting yourself off from the rest of us in order to bury yourself in your art again any time soon?

It is no secret that God loves us all.
He has many flocks. I delivered a message
in Calif. that basically said Stop persecuting my people. Regarding Gay people, That was from God! We have made very little progress since. God sends his word out and it does not return until it has accomplished what he sent it out to do.
The Mormon church has been receiving correction directives. They just won't listen!
Power trip I think.
