The Mormon church has been very prominent in the national media lately due to the running of Mitt Romney for President of the United States.  Why is there so much scrutiny and questioning of this particular religion?  Every other candidate has a professed belief in a religion yet their beliefs are not under the microscope like those of Mitt Romney.  So that leads me to only one question:  Why is everyone afraid of the Mormons?

I am not a member of the Mormon church but having lived in Utah for sometime now, I have come to know a little bit about this church as many of my neighbors and co-workers are members.  While I do not agree with many tenets of their beliefs, they do not seem as peculiar to me as the media and the so-called "anti-Mormons" want us all to believe.

If it is o.k. to speak bad of the religion of Mitt Romney and force him to explain its doctrine to ensure the American people that his leadership will not be dictated by the prophet in Salt Lake City, then should not every candidate be subject to the same treatment?

In a country that boasts the freedom of religion for all citizens, it seems very apparent to me that hypocrisy is increasingly becoming the "religion" that will never be separate from the state.

Simple:

We are currently living in a state of Fear...

Fear of Terrorism, Gay's, Immigrants, different beliefs...

Fear overrides the Reasoning center of the Brain, thus abandoning Reason, Justice, Education...

Where has Compassion gone to, was it ever here? I believe that Religion divides mankind... This belief or that belief creates a separation between those that believe like you and those that believe something else. In a way it is a simple brand to disregard the opinions of those that may believe differently than you do.

Often the first Questions asked are What do you believe or what political affiliation do you belong to? Simply to Brand the person; Friendly or possibly enemy... If one is a Republican and finds out they are talking to a Democrat, they probably will not truly listen to anything they have to say based upon their brand... The same applies to the opposite.

Rather than judging a book by it's cover, why not delve into it's contents? Sure you open yourself to attack, critique, criticism, or even hostility... But you never know what a good friend you might just find on the other side of the fence...

I don't mind most of the questions people have about being a Mormon--I think it is understandable to want to know more about something you have little experience with. What I object to is the loaded questions that are accusatory and often downright rude and bigoted. For some reason, it seems to be OK to treat Mormons and their religion in this manner, but if a word such as "Republican" or "Jew" or "woman" were inserted into these questions and comments, people would be outraged. Unfortunately, most Mormons (for several generations now) have come to accept it as part of being LDS. Fortunately, nobody is issuing extermination orders against Mormons these days, but the inaccurate judgments and assumptions, and the downright hateful comments still come under the category of "persecution." It's shameful.

You talk about persecution what about the persecution that the church puts on people living in utah thats not LDS. with its laws on clubs and bars the whole thing about memberships,Gambling. Why do the rest of us have to live by there doctrine. and since you mentioned extermination orders what about the masacure that Brigham Young ordered. You want to talk Hateful comments and persecution I want to know why its ok for any religion to sell hate in the name of religion. I guess I would feel the same if the church didn't do the same to others such as homosexual transgendered and we can go back to as early as the 70's when Blacks were discriminated against in the Mormon church. So until all mankind is treated equally including the begger on the streets. I feel that religion is just an excape goat for people to hide behind and say and do in the name of religion

To grant920,
The majority of people who live in UT are LDS. The laws governing gambling, liquer, and clubs are a result of the consenses of the majority. If this kind of provincial living is not for you, you can always move to another state.

Sorry but the majority is no longer mormon as the last news report that statement is not true. Mormons only make up 47% of utah population and then you would have to wonder how many of those are active in the church

My name in Enrico and I come from El Salvador. I came to this country almost 15 years ago to have a better life for my family. I did it the legal way and waited my turn. Even though I come from a different country, I am an American. I am proud of my heritage and where I came from but I am here now and this is the country I love and the country I am proud to be a citizen of. God bless America! She is truly the nation above all nations.
