I hear so often about the lack of funding for Utah Schools.  But I wonder if the money spent in "TAX PAYER" dollars is being spent properly.

I will give an example... In speaking to a school teacher in the Jordan School District about her desire to move into the local adminstration.  She told me about the pay increase. Which I understand.  But what I do not understand is the "Clothing allowance" given to the "adminstrators". (ie...Asst. Principal, Principal..so forth.)

Why do we need to give a clothing allowance to an adminstrator who is making a much larger salary that a teacher?  I asked about the salary of an adminstrator... It is sizable.  Again, I ask why do they need a clothing allowance?  I wish I had one at my job!

This is not all.  A year ago I went to the local Jr.High to register my son for a "community school" class and was stunned to see a Big-Screen TV in the front office.  Not a plasma or an LCD TV... but a large projection screen type TV.  In asking the receptionist, I was told it was used as a "Marquee" for students in the halls or for visitors to the office.  I was stunned!  Why a $2500.00 TV to be used in this manor?

I don't know... I think public monies could be better spent on students...and their "teachers" not at the "discretion" of an adminstrator.

No, I don't believe it, a clothing allowance?...you're fun'n me...I can tell.

I've been to the schools many many many times and I can tell you from personal empirical observations, that nobody I talked to looked like they had any kind of allowance for cloths.

Save money this way.

Why do we have multiple school districts. That is a lot of administration salaries and apparently a lot of clothing allowances.

One school district per county or better yet, per state. Not so many chiefs more Indians. Excuse me Native Americans. More money saved.

I Promise...There are no fun and games with this post.

I was in disbelief when I found out about the clothing allowance...

But it is true...true...true. I confirmed with with another teacher that I know.

Money that should really be for giving our children what they need... Good teachers with good pay!

Good post! I have questioned the public trough from which education draws deep and often in both California and now in Utah. Efforts I have made in pursuing information that should be public knowledge, like the percentage of school administrators to teachers, has been thwarted at every effort. The school boards appear to be closed societies. An executive city official I know [name & title withheld] has tried the same queries with the same results. We should be very wary of the claims by such closed organizations of how much money they need to continue operations.

And I do not understand the "closed society" thing either. School Boards (most of them) are publically elected. And paid out of public monies.

Where is the oversight? It should not be a open pit.

School Districts are "Top Heavy" with too much ADMIN. Too many bosses...and bosses to count the bosses... and bosses to oversee those who count the bosses...

Where is the open disclosure they they say they give... I'm not seeing it!

they have this fancy auditourium prob.worth more than the school itself, and the teachers dont get much money, and the clothing allowence is true, for everyone higher in the rank of receptionist. (so what, 6 people with $50 each!!) and the school lacks the supplies for students who enspecially dont have the money to eat at the school( but they do with free lunch....)
i bought 50 notebooks for kids who need a note book, one each. They were gone in seconds!!!!! i bought 15 packs of pencels(300 pencils) 2 per student, they were gone faster than the notebooks!!! ive benn trying to help the school, and i hope that they will get a better spending fund for us in the "public" schools.

And i quote," NO MORE CLOTHING ALLOWANCE FOR THE HIGHER SCHOOL STAFF UNLESS YOU DISTRIBUTE THE MONEY FAIR TO THE OTHER STAFF LIKE TEACHERS!"

millie: that is a good thought, but i think that wont work,(or can it.....................................................
.........................................???)

How many years now have we all been hearing "more money for education"? The govenor and legislators just rolled over on the tax payors and granted the largest increase in educational money in the history of the state!! Education was already getting 50% of the states budget. They were given a 25% increase!! How much of that money will actually find its way to the classroom?? How much will the UEA be back asking for next year!!

what i say the percent of the money will go to the classroom is about 3 to 14%. but thats what i think.

I think the money they just gave to education is targeted towards teachers. If anyone watched Jon Stossels report on this issue you know that he was bombarded by the school union with a massive protest. School boards have power and they don't want anyone touching it.

My daughter is a Special Ed teacher at Granite School district and works very hard for a very modest income. She was very glad to hear the teachers were all getting a $2500 dollar across the board raise and a $1000 bonus.

I've been reading some very flaky stuff in the Ogden Standard Examiner lately that the raise may not be as much and it will be sometime in the winter, but no real firm date. My daughter can't seem to get to the Scoop on it!!

Has anybody heard anything definitive on this-like is it a DONE DEAL and when will the raise go into effect??

Utah is Home! I've lived in other states... but Utah is Home. Good Food, Fun, Hiking and tons of other things to do. Mountains, Water, Snow... all of the best! I work in the outdoors. So being outside all of the time is better than being in my office anyday. My worst day outside is still better than being attached to the desk in my office. You Gotta Love it Baby!
