What can we do to stop OUR companies from leaving the U.S. to manufacture in other countries like Lazboy leaving Tremonton? The loss of 630 jobs would be rough in SLC, but it's a catastrophe in a town the size of Tremonton. Why are they leaving? We cost too much to employ. Between wages, health care, retirement plans, sick day pay, in some cases on site child care. We've become spoiled, we want these things or we won't work. Well I see more and more of us watching good jobs leave our borders. We need to get more realistic, WE ARE IN COMPETION with the world, and they work cheap and don't expect all the perks. We're going have to make some concessions to keep our emploment base. We can't keep watching OUR jobs go to other countries. We may be proud of our unions, or health care plans, they do little for the unemployed. We need to become competitive while there's still something here worth competing for.

Nothing...

That is corporate American policy:

Thou shall NOT pay people what they are worth. Outsource to countries with cheap labor. The only way it will change if these other countries start paying people what they are worth...

OUR GOVERNMENT HAS A RESPONSIBILITY, SET FORTH BY THE PREAMBLE TO THE CONSTITUTION, TO INSURE DOMESTIC TRANQUILITY AND THE COMMON WELFARE, AND STOP SENDING ALL OF OUR JOBS ELSEWHERE... Providing JOBS and opportunities for citizens and not expanding the profit margin with cheap labor in foreign countries!!!

I think motoxcoma says it best "nother Corporate J**kA**."

You know why our country is going down the tubes... It is because people are so two faced, and will go to any lengths to make a buck...

Maybe it will change if we complain enough. I know the company I work for, AT&T/SBC, is pulling all of their work out of India because so many customers complained about it.

At the risk of having the (obvious) sarcasm not understood ...

There's another way to look at it ... more jobs in other nations means fewer illegal aliens here.

Time for economics 101

If all of us would only buy goods made in America it would not take long for those outsourcing turncoats to come whimpering back! The problem is we spend way to much time shopping at China Mart (walmart) looking for the cheapest stuff. You can thank all of our politicians for all the free trade agreements. We (the consumer) are the drivers of the econonmy. We need to support the home town boys/girls. I personally have purchased my last product from LAzy Who ever they are!

trisjennjhth,

630 jobs to Mexico?! They can hire twice that many for half the price.

Don't go blaming Mexicans ... they aren't the one's who decided to move the factory. That's greed from the people who made the decision. What nationality would those corporate big wigs be? HMMMMMMM

Metaphorical penny bet says prices will go up to cover cost for building new facilities.

jpouchjeff,
Don't forget to factor in benefits and union fees and other costs into what workers here made. If those aren't factors for the Mexican workers, you can't hold the difference against them ... just the owners and Board of Lazy Boy. What workers receive here is not what workers in most other places around the globe have the luxury of even dreaming about.

There was a time when most products we bought were labeled "Made in U.S.A.". Today it's mighty hard to find such an item. WalMart accounts for 10% of China's export production. What happened to the time when Sam Walton was proud to sell products made here. But do we care? Just look at the cars in any WalMart lot. Our phones are handled from India, Mexico builds many of our cars and other things. My Motorola radios were made in Israel, now Malaysia. Zenith, RCA were companies that were builders of America, now outside the U.S. We better find a way to produce again. In WWII what saved the world was the immense production capability of the U.S., sure hope we never need that again.

mariposa I was not holding Mexico responsible for this at all. It is Lazy boy board and to some aspect us for not buying only U.S. Made.

im sorry but all it is going to do when they move the lazy boy factory to mexico is force 600 mexicans back to mexico to get their old jobs back. made in america used to mean somthing because it was products being made by americans but that has not been the case for a long time. the people who seem so shocked by this are the same people who have had their heads burried in the sand while illigals took all of jobs from americans. but now you seem suprised ? why ? you were here doing NOTHING as they crept over the boarder and slowley stole your country away from you.its time for america to wake up and make made in america mean somthing again !! but you will need to start by bocoyting american companeys that hire illigals and dont just boycot but call corprate office to tell them why. march around with signs telling people why you are boycoting. call your congressman, call the govoner complain to anyone who will listen because if you dont you are the lazyboy and you cant complaine if you do nothing to stop it.

I work with a company that has 60 call centers around the world and everyday I speak to many customers that are glad to have someone in the United States. Customers are constantly complaining that they cannot understand those that are overseas, and in my position having to speak with some of these centers, I have a struggle with the language barrier. We need to get our companies back into the United States. Our opportunities are being taken away, as I have wrote about this same issue in my blog, that you can see in the political section. It takes more than one voice to get something done. We all have to make an effort to get our foundation put back together, without a foundation we will not stand.

My husband's company is also moving their operations to Mexico in June and about 500 people will lose their jobs there. I understand the frustration and questions that come with that kind of decision and the upheaval in causes for families. We are moving to Iowa and will have to start all over there, but he has family there, so we will have help during this process.
I agree with many of the sentiments expressed, but the solution to this problem is not an easy one. While it is true that US companies have the expense of providing benefits, which include medical, leave pay, etc, I don't think just boycotting and/or calling corporate offices will work.
There are many issues involved with a company's decision to move operations out of the US. Congress needs to seiously look at the cost of medical care in this country. European countries provide socialized medicine, which takes profit out of the equation for hospitals pharmaceutical companies, and doctors.
That would lower or eliminate the high mal-practice insurance that these providers have to carry, which would translate to lower costs for companies.
European countries also tax their citizens at higher rates to help cover the costs of socialized medicine. So, again, I agree with what Bubbapit said about Americans needing to be willing to "bite the bullet" and give up some of our advantages.
We Americans need to start shouldering the responsibility for what's going wrong with our country and quit blaming the illegals for the loss of jobs. The Latino/Hispanic citizens were actively recruited by the US Government during both

there are a lot of problems with the current "state of the union". our biggest ids cooperate greed. as many ceos are getting obscenely huge retirement benefits and big oil is claiming "our mark up is below standard". some of these cooperate big wigs could have left the companies they worked for with a quarter of the pension and retirement benefits and still had more than they would need for the comfortable life they are accustomed to living. its a pathetic idea that fifty percent of the nations wealth is owned by five percent of the nations population. if you think they are spending the money here your wrong. as they fire those who made them their millions they grin in delight of the money they made. as they destroy the lives of the ones without whom they would live in scwaller
