Well, it was inevitable that a state would finally approve gay marriage. I see both positive and negative aspects. Being traditional I belive marriage is between a man and a woman, but for many years we've been abusing marriage and using divorce like a turnstyle. And I concede that gay people have a right to a legal bond. If there is anyone to answer to, it's not you and I. We need to stop the hate. We need to find a way to live without the fighting. I do not morally condone the gay lifestyle, nor will I condemn them, there is no "gihad" that is acceptable here. We share this world. I may not totally agree with this, but it is a step towards easing the hate and discontent. It's a changed world, we change with it I guess or die.

The state made a good point... Government can't prohibit straight marriage, So justice and fairness MUST be shared across the board.

I don't give a flying turd what anyone else likes to do in the bedroom for "sensual" kicks... In my opinion I think most of the "Sexual" problems facing us are because Americans are Sex-a-phobes... Too Afraid and ashamed of their bodies and that creates unhealthy outlook on things.

Let Gays marry, they are people too!!! If some one told me I couldn't marry my wife, I would die from laughing so hard!!!

I agree with you, The Hate and discontent needs to stop... You can't claim to be a honorable and compassionate society if you are NOT Honorable and Compassionate!!!

the biggest problems with this ruling is: #1: if two men get married in california, then according to the laws of our nation, that marriage must be recognized in EVERY state of the union.... and #2: once again a small group of people have used the courts to overthrow the will of the majority.
hey, why should we even vote anymore if it doesn't mean a thing????? when the courts say that the will of the majority of the population does not matter, that only the desires of the few are of any importance, then we have lost what this nation supoosedly stands for.

Spacealien... That is what scares me the most in a democracy...

What if the Majority voted to annihilate the constitution?

Then the Congress would be able to take action to prevent it ... or it would happen and this nation would fall. It's why the change process was made with so many levels; we cannot act on emotion alone. Those are the laws that inevitably fail.

As far as the blog topic ... my parents had a 'traditional marriage'; it was also an abusive one. The two men next door were who we would go to when we felt unsafe. Yet, society invalidates that stability.

I cannot and will not take any action which would compromise the intergrity and honor these two exceptional men gave. If they weren't who they were, I wouldn't have become the person I am.

Space,
You are thinking narrow mindedly. Not only males are affected. And, it isn't about desires ... it's about rights. The Constitution guarantees individuals' rights; not automatic majority rule. When the will of the people is in conflict with the Constitution, the courts step in to define and explain the issue.
I'm not saying where my postion on gay rights is because I have no place to say anything about what goes on between a consenting couple in the privacy of their bedroom or before god.

I am not spacealien, but the Constitution has been eroded withouth any majority vote.

There are wars without declarations of wars; there is no constitutional money, no use of gold or silver in individual states, and no coining of anything but small change tokens and printing of paper by the feds or appointed agancies. There are numerous cases of searches and arrests without probable cause, and numerous states infringe the right to keep and bear arms.

The federal government have far exceeded their ennumerated powers.

As far as I know the redefining of words is not the role of any government or judge. "Marriage" is a union between two adults in every definition I have ever seen in any reputable dictionary. "Marriage" between people of the same gender cannot be said to exist.

Whoops! I meant of course that "Marriage" is a union between a man and a woman, as defined by any reputable dictionary that I have ever checked. You cannot have, therefore, a homosexual "Marriage".

M-X.. i just used two males to illustrate a point. and the constitution of these united states only applies to the federal government, not the states. nor does the bill of rights protect you from the state government or businesses, only the federal government. and it is not about rights, but very much about desires. if a man and woman wish to get married, is that not a desire??

akiame: why is it always put forth by the liberals as something that is totalitarian and evil when the majority of the population wants something that is different or opposite to that which liberals desire?? what i see going on in our nation, and this ruling by the cal supreme court is a prime example, is the absolute definition of totalitarianism. a very small group of individuals once again used the courts to force their desires and wishes on the population at large. because these people didn't like the results of an election, they went to the courts. good thing i'm not rich, because if hilbillary clintonsta or barak obama bin laden win the election in november, i would file suit to overthrow it. now, doesn't that sound exactly like what the very small group of people in california did?

So the courts are writing their entire new interpretation of our constitution. We the "majority" are no longer allowed to excercise a sensible voice. Special interests seem to have all control. And we seem unable to effect any positive change. Mebbe we need to toss many judges off the bench. Considering the majority is supposed to rule, it doesn't. But we cannot allow that to create a state of chaos and anarchy. We have to manage to co-exist like people, and not animals. I'm sure there are few normal people who do not understand the far reaching ramifications of this matter. But until we depose those who are allowing the minority to dictate our morality we have to live. Voting often seems futile, I agree, but it's all we have. I think more "common citizens" need to place their hat in the ring. Professional politicians and judges are owned by the money special funnels to them. Why is it legal to spend millions to be elected? Why are campaign donations allowed at all? Mebbe if they weren't we'd find "real people" back in control as it was meant to be.

"Well, it was inevitable that a state would finally approve gay marriage."

To be precise, four lemming-like oligarchs joined 11 other U.S. jurisdictions already imposing these dubiously legal domestic arrangements on their roughly 36,499,996 subjects.

When you take religious ethics out of the picture, I can't think of any logical reason why two people who love each other can't all have the same legal rights as the next two. Who cares if it's two men, two women, or one of each? As long as they're not causing harm to themselves or others and it does not directly impinge on the rights of others, then I don't see a problem with letting two people in a relationship having legal rights. A heterosexual couple is no better than a homosexual one so it makes sense to let ALL adults have the same legal rights as the next. What harm is it going to do to let gay men get married? Seriously. The world will not suddenly come to an end, society will not crumble, the country will not fall into a fiery pit, etc. It is fine to have your own religious beliefs but it's not right or fair to use your beliefs to impinge on the rights of others. If others don't share your beliefs then your "consequences" don't apply to them either. Your beliefs apply to yourself and no one else. I support California's decision and I hope more states start doing to same.

nurselani, would you stand by your statement if the two people who wosh to get married are brother and sister? or two brothers? or two sisters? if the courts can say that it is OK for homosexuals to get married, then why shouldn't siblings who want to get married have that same "right"? after all, precedent has been set with the decision of the cali supreme court. oh, and by the way, should the people of kansas, or wisconsin have to be subject to this decision? because that is precisely what this ruling does.... it affects the ENTIRE nation, not just california!!!
and your statement that a heterosexual couple is no better than a homosexual couple is not completely correct. you see, only heterosexual couples can have offspring resulting from their union. and THAT is the reason the institution of marriage came about in the first place, not for any religious reasons. those came later!!

Actually marriage is a religious thing and therefore has no place as being a "legally defined" institution. According to the first Amendment we are not suppose to be making laws that respect an establishment of religion. It wasn't even suppose to be a law to begin with.

I actually think that religious marriage itself should remain a religious thing and civil unions (with the legal powers and benefits of current marriages) should be available to everyone. The legal aspects of a partnership should be a equal rights. Then it's up to individual churches to define what marriage means. After all not everyone is Christian, so it stands to reason Christians shouldn't have the final say on everyone's private lives.

I am all for removing religion from our government. I am sick of zealots trying to legislate their dogma unconstitutionally. I welcome anyone that would bring that change into our government. GOOD FOR YOU CALIFORNIA!!! CHANGE IS COMING AND THE CHRISTIAN ZEALOTS ARE GONNA HAVE TO TAKE IT REGARDLESS!!! WOOHOO!!!

Oh and spacealien, show us some proof of your last statement about why marriage was created. Marriage comes from many cultures, not just the Christians. According to that hogwash you just spewed, any hetro couple unable to reporduce, should not be married. That is the biggest bunch of cr_p I've read in awhile. Hetro couple are no better. PERIOD!

Space,
Please accept my humble apologies for not having interpeted correctly as an example. States do, indeed, violate individuals rights all the time while crying protection under the Tenth Amendment ... the same one that addresses individuals rights. Doesn't makeit acceptable.
If all children were born into traditional situations, we'd have no problems. However, that is not the case. There are far too many children who have no parents or a supportive environment. Why shouldn't they have the loving support my siblings and I had from someone other than our parents? Who cares what 'the equipment' is? We are talking about a perhaps not ideal solution to a definitely not ideal social circumstance.
Remember, I always put children's needs first. This would allow some children to have a stable home environment. Would I like things to be different, yes. The reality is that they aren't. If a stable man/woman home cannot be found, a child deserves the stability he/she can find in an alternative situation be it single parentor same sex parents.
Your logic to nurselani opens the door for every marriage being scrutinized. There would be an assumption that establishes expectation of failure. That's a pretty grim view of humanity. Ofcouse, at some level it is also reality.

Our basic laws are all based on someone's morality. How else can they be based? Logic doesn't exist in a vacuum; there are always postulates which are self-evident truths.

Laws have been based for millenia on the "religious" view that "Thou shalt not steal", and "Thou shalt not kill", and even "Thou shalt not commit adultery". We used to think it obvious that these were all evil acts with a destructive effect on individuals and society.

Then we started to disregard good laws. I think that it is still illegal in Utah and other states to commit adultery, fornication and sodomy - but the laws are not carried out.
Where these laws have lapsed liberal zealots have concocted thousands protecting and excusing crime. Their "religion" is what is unsound, their bigotry is destroying us, and not the sound principles of the past.

lifeliberty,

Those Utah laws were actually found unconstitutional by the supreme court see Lawrence v. Texas.

Your argument saying that someone's moral code must apply simply is not true. All you need to apply are the basics. You don't need a god to tell you that Stealing, Killing, Assaulting and Destroying something that is not yours is wrong. If you are causing harm to another or taking something that is theirs you are wrong.

Adultry, Fornication, Sodomy, Prostitution etc. are an illegal laws according to the constitution. You cannot apply these laws because they respect religion. These are religious based. Some laws like murder, theft, rape fall under basic human rights to survive. You don't need a god to tell you that these are wrong.

If your argument is correct, perhaps we should start applying Muslim law as well. After all, muslims live here too. In fact, there are more Muslims in the world than Christians. Tell all the women in your family to cover their faces. Eh???

Furthermore, religion is and has been at the forefront of every major atrocity commited by man. So spare us your hypocritical statement that "liberals" are tearing down the world. Please. If you view it that way, then you are becoming the minority. People are getting sick of religious zealots (true zealots) dictating, oppressing and legislating their garbage dogma. You would be singing a different tune if you were made to cover your face and denied your education because of someone's dogma. Well I am tired of being robbed of my liberties because of fanatics like you.
