Gas Guzzling Blues -- Douglas Chick

I have an Infiniti FX 35 that gets 18 miles a gal, and Land Rover that gets 13 miles a gal, and a Jeep Cherokee that get around 17. The Infiniti is the best of the 3 on gas, but at 18 miles a gallon, at near $4 a gallon, I may as well drive a Sherman tank.

(This sounds like a country song, doesn’t it?)

The SUV trend that saved the American Car makers is quickly sending them to the grave. Because dealers are offering little for a SUV trade in, (because they can’t get rid of them) the remaining value leaves you upside down on your car loan. This balance is then placed on top of the already over priced fuel efficient cars loan, combined, you really don’t save any money.

Will the high price of gas put the final nail in the American car maker’s coffin, or force them to be more fuel efficient?

...not withstanding, why are all the hybrids so damn ugly?

$130,000 in cars and you're complaining about gas? lol! Sell them all.. buy a 1987 Honda Accord and have enough gas for life.

just givin ya some grief.. I'm glad you're prosperous.. that's what America is all about! ;)

I'm into hot rodding and have an 8.1 Liter Big Block, I'm LUCKY to get 10mpg out of it. Needless to say it's parked except for the occasional weekend blast. I've sucked up my pride and purchased a little used Hitler Mobile (Turbo 4cyl VW) as my daily driver.

I think you're right though.. this will be the end of gas guzzling SUV's.. it won't be the end of SUV's though. GM's hydrogen SUV's are ready to roll out of the plant.. now they are just focusing on the hydrogen infrastructure. They are predicting prices somewhere in the $2.00 per gallon range.
To be honest.. I'd be willing to pay 5bucks per gallon if it just meant we were out from under the middle easts thumb, we need to be energy independent.

Oh the gasoline prices are depressing. The only problem is that they are not going to go down. I remember when people were freaking out over gas being three dollars a gallon. Now people are excited about Dodge trying to bring those gas prices to that same price. Soon they are going to be $10 dollars a gallon and people will be talking about how wonderful it was when the prices were what they are now. 10 years from now only the filthy rich will have cars unless America comes up with a solution. I am going to buy a nicer car this summer. The hybrids and electric cars are ugly, so while I probably should not invest as much money as I plan on I am going to do it since these next five or ten years may be my last chance to drive a damn car at all. At least one that's not some clown sized electric car that the news is showing. Those things are being priced at least $45,000.00 That is not going to save most Americans money. That will just get people into more debt especially with the government trying to wipe out the middle class. If looks are not that important to you maybe you should get a more economic vehicle. Otherwise do what I do and get a good looking car while you can still afford to drive! EDIT!

Don't blame oil companies for record profits, It is just supply and demand...

The People demand answers and "they" supply the Bull $hit excuses!!!

You can only squeeze so much out of people, but like Bush gives a $hit about the plights of the common man. His homeboy Chenney is making bank and they will scratch each others backs... Who knows maybe even more!

A friend has a 91 Civic, 37 mpg. Today's Civics rated at 36 mpg. Why in 17 yrs. are they no better? Our Suburban gets 14 city, 18 highway, not bad for a whale. It's parked now in favor or a 20yr. old BMW 325I. It's stay close to 30. My Caravan, 17 highway, 13 city. I've got a 65 Olds 88 with a 425 that beats that! Manufacturers aren't trying very hard.
